A quick-thinking motorist averted a possible disaster yesterday when he used his CB radio to warn a petrol tanker driver that his truck was leaking fuel.
A 30,000-litre ESSO tanker sprang the leak from loose manifold pipes as it went along Woodville Road, Villawood. But, warned by driver of the vehicle behind him, the tanker driver immediately drove into the safety of a grass field near Villawood Road.
Firemen reconnected the loose pipe, cutting the flow of petrol to a trickle. Mr Bruce Johnson, from the brigade's Fire Investigation Unit, said about 1,500 litres of fuel had been spilt.
While firemen covered the area in foam, police evacuated about 100 residents from a nearby block of flats and closed busy Woodville Road until the remaining fuel in the leaking vehicle was pumped into a second tanker.
